Eligibility Requirements

For Current PhD Students:

Must be enrolled in a full-time PhD program at an African university. Students transferring from part-time to full-time programs are also eligible.
Applicants should be in the early stages of their PhD, having started their program on or after January 1, 2022.
Must remain enrolled in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship.
Must be pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
Google employees and their family members are not eligible.
Students receiving another corporate fellowship are not eligible.

For Undergraduate/Master’s Students and Professionals:

Applicants must commit to joining a full-time PhD program at an African university within the calendar year of the award.
Student applicants must be full-time Undergraduate or Master’s students at an African university. Professionals must be affiliated with an organization registered in Africa.
The Fellowship award is contingent on enrollment in a full-time PhD program in Computer Science or a related field within the award year.
Fellowship approval does not guarantee admission to a PhD program; applicants must complete the university’s admission process independently.
Google employees and their family members are not eligible.

Fellowship Benefits

Named Fellowships with monetary awards disbursed through the university to cover stipends and research expenses.
Mentorship from a Google Research Mentor.
Depending on the country, fellows may receive:

Up to 3 years of funding.
Up to $85,000 for stipends, research activities, and travel expenses (including international travel).

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following documents in English:

Resume with links to websites and publications (if available).
Academic transcripts from the first year of the Bachelor’s degree to the present.
Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references).
2-3 recommendation letters, including at least one from the thesis advisor (for current PhD students).
A one-page resume of the PhD program advisor.
A 350-word limit essay addressing: What impact would receiving this scholarship have on your education?
Describe any circumstances affecting your need for a scholarship and what educational goals this scholarship will enable you to accomplish.

Additional documents may be required based on the applicant’s country.
